First Chapter Analysis

Your opening chapter is the first impression a reader has of your novel, so you want to start strong. But you are also just warming up at this stage. It can be massively helpful to get feedback at this early stage.

My first chapter analysis includes a summary of what is and isn’t working well. It focuses on:

  • the impact of your first line and the hook

  • how you’ve introduced your main character (and anyone else)

  • how you’ve set the scene (setting and time period)

You can submit up to 3,000 words.

My first chapter analysis does not include:

  • rewriting

  • line editing

  • copy editing

  • proofreading

A first chapter analysis is for you if:

  • You want feedback early on.

  • You feel your first chapter doesn’t have the impact you want it to have.

First chapter analyses might require rewriting. However, the contents of my analysis are just suggestions based on my research and knowledge of fiction theory. Ultimately, it’s your book, and you can choose which (if any) of my suggestions you accept.
