Developmental Editing

Developmental editing focuses on the big-picture elements of novel writing, such as plot, characterisation, pacing and genre expectations. It’s usually the first step in the editing process.

My developmental edit includes an editorial report and in-document comments with specific comments/suggestions.

My editorial report

  • provides insight into fiction theory and genre expectations

  • discusses historical believability (whether your story makes sense for the period), theme, dialogue and inner monologue, and voice/tone/style

  • looks out for instances of head-hopping or possible issues of offence

  • analyses plot, structure, pacing, characterisation and scene versus summary (show, don’t tell)

My editorial report is not:

  • ghostwriting

  • line editing

  • copy editing

  • proofreading

Developmental editing is for you if:

  • You feel you need help with the big-picture elements of novel writing.

  • You want professional feedback on an early draft of your manuscript.

  • You need some guidance.

Developmental editing typically requires substantial rewriting. However, the contents of my editorial report are suggestions based on my research and knowledge of fiction theory. Ultimately, it’s your book, and you can choose which (if any) of my suggestions you accept.
